July Program

"On-The-Job Stress Relief"

Kathy Willis
Director of Workforce Education, Solutions and Safety Training at Lewis and Clark Community College

Everyone experiences stress, yet some handle it better than others.  And stress isn’t always negative.  The pressure of deadlines, for example, can drive positive actions.  Therefore, a brief review of biochemistry regarding cortisol and Amygdala Hijackings will enable participants to better understand the stress relief techniques to be discussed.

Stress triggers in our private lives can be controlled from spilling into our professional environment. These include personal situations such as divorce, birth of a child, loss of a loved one, moving, medical concerns and many others.  Participants will practice the mindfulness technique of “deep breathing” coupled with “bookmarking” to minimize such stressors so that they don’t carry into the workplace.

The remainder of the discussion will be additional relief techniques for on-the-job stress such as certain customer interactions, project management and deadline stress, and physical space/equipment ergonomics.  The “Stay or Go” stress assessment tool will be used with its stress management techniques.  Those for “Stay” are:

  • Visioneering
  • Dealing
  • Segmenting

Those for “Go” are:

  • Reframing
  • Pigeon-holing
  • Hydrating
  • Neck rolling
  • Eye exercising
